I'm rereading the book (published in 1949) and, second time around, this gem stood out: "Our knowledge of what is biologically important is so scanty that we worship ideas which merely sound good. For instance, we now worship an idea of extraversion with the result that even intelligent people come to think that a normal man is the one who is active, driving, enterprising all his waking life. The result is a cult of exteriorization producing a new type of neurotics, ruining their children's lives and wasting away their own." His is a critical look at our culture, written decades before the pace of life has accelerated to an unhealthy degree.
